Services for the Children

In the early 1990s, MBSCC began a considerable expansion when it was selected to participate in the Comprehensive Community Revitalization Program (CCRP), spearheaded by the Surdna Foundation and funded by a consortium of 21 foundations.  MBSCC’s programs and diversified services grew significantly in response to the needs articulated by community residents and stakeholders, growing to include Early Childhood Education, Universal Pre-K, Daycare, Summer Camp, Head Start, Youth Development, ESL and pre-GED classes.  MBSCC began to recognize that community-revitalization begins with healthy and engaged young people.  As an organization that is deeply involved with its community, particularly with the parents of children in its Early Childhood Center, MBSCC understands the urgency of South Bronx residents to have positive alternatives to overcrowded, unsafe and failing public schools.  The following highlight our expanding education and youth services:

Early Childhood Center:

Head Start

The provision of adequate childcare is essential for keeping families active in the work force and engaged in the community.  Our Head Start program began in 1995 with four service areas: education, health, parent involvement and social services.  We've joined together with parents from varied backgrounds in order to help children succeed in school and in life.

In the Fall of 2012, our Head Start program will expand from 88-269 children at our center, including the creation of new classrooms.  We also provide vocational counseling, adult education, nutrition/health services, and literacy development to parents and adults.  We offer a safe, nurturing environment where both children and parents come to learn and excel. Our Head Start program operates year round  and is absolutely free!

Day Care

Early Learning Center, implemented in 2000, has multiple community partners, including collaborations with outside agencies such as Universal Pre-Kindergarten (UPK), Human Resource Administration (HRA) and Agency for Children Services (ACS). Our Day Care program is licensed by the Department of Health and provides pre-school services to a diverse population of children 3 to 5 years old.  The Center is staffed with qualified, multicultural, multilingual professionals who plan age appropriate activities for the children to help foster their intellectual, social and emotional growth.  Our program is enriched with music, creative arts, dance, educational trips and computer training.

The Andrew Freedman will also serve as the central office for the Day Care expansion program for children from infancy to four years old.  This expanded program will provide services for 328 children at three neighborhood sites. In addition, 40 home based providers will service an additional 200 children.  These providers receive ongoing training, supervision ad support from our staff.

Homework Help Program

Our Homework Help Program is primarily a free, after school homework assistance service for a maximum of elementary students.  The program operates during the public school calendar year and addresses key parts of the learning process of Title One students. Students are tutored in reading comprehension, vocabulary skills and phonics, essay writing, geography, social studies, history and mathematics. The program runs from Monday - Friday from 3:00pm - 5:30pm and snacks are provided.
